The Italian appeals process weaponized procedural weakness, and the community was left with a player either genuinely exonerated or obviously guilty depending on who you asked. That ambiguity is itself the damage.

What emerges is a cautionary pattern for AI governance beyond games. Communities that wait until after misconduct occurs to build detection infrastructure are already lost. Once the incentive structure shifts—when AI assistance becomes a competitive advantage—the enforcement game becomes asymmetric. Cheaters move faster than referees, and institutions playing catch-up face the Metta dilemma: either accept massive Type-II error rates (guilty players exonerated) or risk Type-I errors (false accusations destroying innocent careers). Go opted for the former and lost credibility. The field has since fragmented: some tournaments now ban AI, some require it, and some maintain fiction while tacitly accepting it.

For observers watching AI's integration into high-stakes domains—professional services, academic credentials, financial trading—the Go precedent is unambiguous. Institutions that treat integrity mechanisms as optional, or that assume AI will remain segregable from human competition indefinitely, will repeat Go's trajectory.
